Dolt: Sigh... I miss this.

You know what, I'm bringing it back.

I know someone will see this eventually.

I know this was posted on fb, but this seems like the proper forum in which is should be discussed.

In refrence to the chosen spliting point of the Deathly Hallows film (which, after recently re-reading the book I hereby retract my initial regret to the proposal), I first made the point that the first movie is going to have kind of a lame conclusion, almost Othellian in stupidity (points to me for Shakespere refrence)

my second point was this "good break point though, as far as splitting the book is concerned. Gives part one the wedding, break in at the ministry, godric's hollow, the lake/locket scene, and xenophilius's introduction to what the hallows are. Part 2 gets malfoy manor, shell cottage, harry not going after the elder wand (which I think could be fantastic cinematicly), gringotts, battle for hogwarts, king's cross, final duel, and Jo's public apology for the epilouge."

Lets do this thing people

10:19 pm - movie!
Serra: Have you guys seen Watchmen yet?

I went to the midnight showing with some people from school.  It was fun.  The theater (several hundered people, a very large screen) was filled with all college-to-late-twenties-ish.  Really responsive crowd, so there was a lot of cheering at smackdowns and laughing at good lines. :3

I gotta say, I liked the movie a lot more than the book.  They omitted almost all the scenes I didn't like, leaving only the good stuff, at least for me.  ^ ^ The ending change was a little wierd, but I didn't like the interdimentional space being, and Rorschach still dies (sad T_T) so overall I was kinda ambivalent at the change.

It was amazing how everyone looked like they'd popped right out of the book!  Awesome job on the costumes.  (The only one I didn't like was the guy they used in the jail scene.  I think he was just supposed to be really short (?), having that...little person? (PC?) actor didn't really work for me.  Especially since he's the normal guy for characters of that...status, so I think I just see too much of him.)

I liked how there seemed to be a closer pertner connection between Rorschach and Night Owl in the movie.  That was nice to see, and I like how strongly he reacted when Rorschach was killed.

I liked the songs they chose.  A lot of them seemed a little tongue-in-cheek, like the Hallelujah song during that sex scene (which was a little silly, honestly, but was in the book so I accepted it).  I kept expecting one of them to mouth one of the 'Hellelujahs' in time with the song. XD

I liked Rorschach's mask, they did a great job with that.  Especially how the changes would speed up and spread out when he was upset, and were milder and more centered when he was calmer.  It also could have been cool if they had had the blot pattern stationary, but had it change every time the camera moved or if he truned his back.  Either way, I was totally happy with Rorschach's character.

I was also suprised how well the actor for the Comedian did.  I had my doubt since he'd been on Grey's Anatomy, but he actually did really well.  Love the lighting the cigar with the flamethrower.

So, yeah, loved the movie! :D  I've seen it twice so far.  Haha, boosting up those opening weekend numbers!
Oh, and did you know it had the largest midnight release in history for a R rated movie?  Pretty cool.

7:40 pm - Tales of Beedle the Bard
Luffy: *sigh* I wish we could've done a midnight release for this Tales of Beedle the Bard...

Serra, I appreciate you reviewing Watchmen, but now I want you in on this debate I started with Dolt a while back on a Facebook message thread.

*referering to Amazon's collectors edition of Tales of Beedle the Bard*

Luffy: but i don't know why there's a book within a book?

Dolt: It's a cute case for the book, like it was hidden in the hogwarts library. Which it wasn't. It was on Dumbledore's bookshelf for 50 years. Way to mess with cannon, amazon.

Luffy: what good is it hiding a Tales of Beedle the Bard in another jacket of Tales of Beedle the Bard?

Dolt: and i quote "Tucked in its own case disguised as a wizarding textbook found in the Hogwarts library"

Luffy: what kind of textbook "disguise" goes by the same title of the concealed text?

Dolt: a bad one?

Is that all there is to it? Amazon not thinking things through?

7:16 pm - and it only took forever
Serra:  Okay, so I finally finished Watchmen.

(Actually, I finished it like two weeks ago, I've just neglected to say so.)
Anyways...gotta be honest, not very fond of the ending.  At all, really.  That epilogue chapter was fine enough, but I didn't like the twist/finale/whatever you'd call it.
The jail break arc was pretty cool, I like it when Nite Owl first gets his hero/vigilante mojo back, but I do like that it is accompanied by another type of mojo that involves ms-whines-a-lot.  Oh, loved that little essay on owls, though.  That was a lot of fun to read., and I kept looking around for owls since there's a pair that hang around the property.
That arc with Manhattan talking to himself on Mars went on forever.  Yes, I did like the backstory, but the constant jumps of 'now I am on mars, now I am in bed with someone, not I am a floating circulatory system, now I'm on mars again, hey, look, it's Kennedy!, etc' dragged the thing on more than it needed to be.  The frames with the clocks falling looked cool.
What we saw of the Comedian showed he was kinda nuts, but for whatever wierd reason I actually like his character.  (Maybe because he wasn't around, for an obvious reason, and as such there wasn't enough time for him to get on my nerves.)
Loved that purple cat, but did not like how it was Ozymandeus (or however you spell it) that was behind everything.  I mean, sure, Russia and the US didn't go to war (or whatever his reason was), but I still did not like his methods.  I've never been much for 'the ends justify the means'.  I agreed much more with Rorschach's fixation on justice (even if he was over the top pessimistic).  Oh, loved the way he was messing with the psychiatrist, who had to be almost smacked in the face with that fact before he realized it.
Hated that pirate comic book they spliced in.  It was just so freaking boring and melodramatic.  I don't care if it was supposed to shadow some of the events or moods of the main story or what have you, it was still boring.

On the whole:  The book was okay.  There were parts I liked, and there was the rare part I really enjoyed, but there were more parts where I felt it dragged on too long or where I just didn't like the direction of the story.  I wouldn't necessarily tell someone to avoid it, but neither will I go crowing its praises.

(Oh, and where did Manhattan go at the end?  It seemed like he just poofed somewhere, but was that just the end?  I ask because he said something about trying to create life himself or something like that, and I was wondering if I was supposed to glean further information from that.)

Dolt, as for getting the book back (which is technically Luffy's but she took yours because she's obsessed and now I guess you're using this one?) will you be up during the Thanksgiving break?  If not would you rather wait until winter or have me mail it to you or something?

Dolt: Thank you Luffy.

And now, for the only HP-related things left to us.

Movie release Nov 21 '08. I know this is Luffy's territory, but plans, people. There will be an IMAX release, and wherever I am, I am seeing a midnight relese. Possibly two, if my flux capacitor has arrived by then.

And as for splits DH release, I vote nay.

7:13 pm - i feel like "leaping" for joy. man, that was bad.
Serra:  Happy Leap Day!  I don't know if that's the official name for it, but that's what everyone's been calling it today, so onto the bandwagon we go!

I learned some interesting facts about leap years:  A leap year occurs every four years, except when the year can be evenly divided by 100.  However, if that year is also evenly divisible by 400, then it is still a leap year.  For example:  1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1800 and 1900 were not.  (Some newscaster said 2000 was not a leap year 'cause of the 100 rule, and I was like: really?  I though it was?  So I looked it up and my memory was right!  Yay me!)

Also, the newspaper today had a little joking article about how the secret to slow aging was to be born on 2/29.  They had a picture of this old woman who was "technically" 16, and the title read "Those Leap Day babies sure do age well".  And then I was thinking, wait, she's "16" and she looks like that, shouldn't it be the complete opposite?  Tsk, tsk, proofreaders.  (Hey!  "Proof"readers. Because the things they check are proofs.  Haha, seems like I should have noticed that before now. :D)

Start saving now if you have to. I'm thinking winter break of 2009 or summer if we can pull it off without screwing up internships.

10:32 pm - Happy (belated) Anniversary!
Luffy: It was Jan. 12th... but hm. At least Serra's b-day celebration covers that... sorry Dolt. ANYHOO! It's been a glorious... FOUR YEARS?! Woo-hoo! Happy Anniversary, guys!

Other note: I agree the parseltongue part died. Now that the scar is benign, all signs of Voldemort should be gone.

Dolt: Thats... thats a good one. It does say very specificly in CoS that a peice of voldemort was transfered to Harry, and that's what gave him the powers. Since we know that peice to be a peice of voldie's soul, I would have to go with yes.

10:55 pm - new year!
Serra:  Happy New Year!  Well, Happy (belated) New Year.  :D
Now I just have to remember to write 2008.

I have a probably easily answered question:  Are we assuming that when Harry "died"  he lost his parseltongue ability? He had the ability because of the soul piece, right?  So if the soul piece was destroyed then he shouldn't be able to do it?  Is there a chance the ability could have been, like, 'absorbed' or something?  I'm correct in thinking JK didn't reference that, aren't I?  I'm pretty sure he can't speak it anymore, but I just wanted to ask.
Silly little question of mine.

11:11 pm - w00t candy!
Serra: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
*nostalgic sigh* If only I was still young enough to go trick-or-treating.  BUT, my fun will not be thwarted!  Well, okay, it's still not as much fun as enjoying Halloween the childhood way, but today I went to school in costume and handed out candy to people in class and random people around campus.  The range of reactions of people when I offered them candy was amusing.  I got a lot of hesitant looks and "are you sure?"s, but a few people had that "Candy!?  Hells yeah!" that I love so much.  And I managed to give away most of it, so less guilty temptation for me, which is definitely good.  And I made sure to get the good stuff, too, like atomic fireballs and chocolate.  Not those cheap flavored tootsie rolls and the like.
Yay Halloween!
I was a monk from Final Fantasy.  What were you guys?  (You better have at least dressed up or I will be very cross with you!  Although, Luffy, what with all your new socializing you were probably at parties all night.  Huh, huh?  Wouldn't be the least bit surprised.)

Dolt: One, Gay dunbledore. Thats just.. just... no. No. Nonononononononono

NO

End of story, my word is law.

As for two, I was just you-tubing, and I caught a glimpse of 11-year-old trio.

HOLY FUCK. I mean that. Especially Hermine and Ron. The only reeal diffrence in Radcliffe is that he looks perpetually happy as opposed to the late movies. But with the other two HOLY FUCK. Strangley enough, 12-year-old trio dosen't phase me at all.
